Tips To Save Money On Your Heating Bill
The winter months are not quite over, which means heating your home is important for safety and health during the more frigid evenings. Of course, with the colder days ahead, striking a balance between energy efficiency and comfort can be a challenge. Here are some tips to save on your heating bill during these last weeks of winter.
It’s All About the Thermostat
Per the U.S. Department of Energy, just lowering the temperature setting by 10 to 15 degrees on your thermostat for eight hours can save about 10 percent per year on your heating bills. If you have a smart thermostat, set it so your home is not heated as much when you are not at home. Adjust your thermostat to keep your home cooler when you are sleeping and use a warm comforter for your bed to keep you warm at night.
Heat Only Where You’re Staying
If you have rooms that are not used often, like guest rooms or large storage areas, close and seal off the vents in those rooms to direct the flow of heated air to the rooms you use most.
Here Comes the Sun
Using the warmth from the sun can be a free source of heat. Opening the curtains or window coverings on the south-facing windows in your home during winter days will allow the sun to heat your home without you needing to use your energy too much.
Dressing for warmth can be one of the easiest ways to reduce energy usage and save money on your heating bill. Rather than turning up the heat on your thermostat, put on a sweater, fleece or sweatshirt, along with some warm socks.
