Propane Safety

Safety is our top priority at Arbor Energy. We take great care and precaution when delivering propane to your home, business, or construction site.

While propane is a safe, clean, and efficient fuel, there are several basic safety tips that you should know as a propane customer. The following information can help prevent a propane hazard from occurring on your property and offers precautionary directions for what to do in the case of an emergency.

Preventative Measures for Propane Safety

  • Schedule an annual tune-up for your propane heating system to make sure all components are in working order.
  • Whether you lease or own your tank, having maintenance performed regularly is critical to your home and family’s safety. If you rent your propane tank, we’ll reach out to schedule this service for you. If you own your own tank, please remember to schedule this with us annually for your protection.
  • Don’t risk running out of gas! This can result in serious safety hazards, including fires and explosions. Make sure you have propane in your tank at all times. Ask us about our convenient automatic delivery service!

Can you smell propane in your home?

  • Propane has a distinct scent similar to sulfur or rotten eggs, often making it easy to detect.
    • If you smell this in your home, react accordingly:
      • Immediately put out any smoking materials or open flames.
      • Do not touch or turn on any light switches or appliances, as this can cause a spark.
      • Leave the building immediately.
      • Turn off your main gas supply if it is safe to do so. To close the valve, turn it to the right (clockwise).
      • Away from your property, report a leak by calling 911 or contacting us at (203) 272-3250 immediately.
      • ONLY return to the area if an Arbor Energy certified employee, emergency responder, or service technician deems it safe.
    • If you are unaware of this smell and you do not currently smell it in your home, please call our office and we will provide you with more information.
